In a study published in the ASM Journals, researchers isolated fungal microbes from NASA cleanrooms, facilities used in spacecraft assembly, testing and launch, that had persisted after decontamination. When subjected to simulations of harsh space and Mars conditions, a fungus called Aspergillus calidoustus survived. "This does not mean contamination of Mars is likely," a researcher said.
