General Motors to fire 14,000 people, shut down 7 plants

US automaker General Motors on Monday announced it's planning to lay off over 14,000 salaried workers and shut down seven plants worldwide. "These actions will increase long-term profit and cash generation potential of the company," GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra said. The company also plans to double the resources for electric vehicle programs in the next two years.
