Germany's Axel Springer shuts news outlet to replace it with AI

German publisher Axel Springer announced the shutting down of its news outlet Upday by the end of 2023, with plans to relaunch it as an AI-driven "trend news generator". The new AI-powered entity is expected to debut in the summer of 2024. A spokesperson confirmed employee layoffs, saying it'll be explored if staff can find positions elsewhere within the company.
