German spy agency classifies far-right party AfD as 'extremist'

Germany's domestic spy agency BfV on Friday classified far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) as an "extremist" entity. BfV's finding that AfD is racist and anti-Muslim allows the authorities to increase surveillance of the party, with measures such as intercepting phone calls and using undercover agents. The AfD came second in federal elections in February with 20.8% of the vote.
