Germany fails to secure seat on the UNSC for the first time

Germany, for the first time, failed to be voted as a non-permanent member to the UN Security Council from the "Western Europe and Others" group, losing to Austria and Portugal. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul described it as a "bitter defeat", adding that support for Ukraine and Israel may have cost them, and that Russia had worked against their candidacy.
