Ghana abolishes death penalty, 124th country to do so

Ghana's parliament on Tuesday voted to abolish capital punishment for crimes, making it the 29th country in Africa and the 124th country worldwide to do so. The move will provide a possible reprieve for 176 prisoners who are reportedly on death row there, with their sentences likely commuted to life imprisonment. Ghana has not carried out any execution since 1993.
