Giant red pillars of light seen falling from skies over Spain amid thunderstorms
French photographer Florian Riou captured rare red sprites above thunderstorms off Spain's coast from Calvi, Corsica. These electrical discharges occur 50-90 km above clouds and last milliseconds. Powerful lightning triggers them, causing atmospheric nitrogen to emit red light. Riou studied thunderstorm locations and calculated viewing angles before attempting the photograph.
