Giant tortoises return to Galápagos islands after 180 years

Floreana lineage giant tortoises have been reintroduced to Floreana island in the Galápagos archipelago for the first time in around 180 years. The subspecies was considered to have gone extinct, however, a relic population of giant tortoises were later discovered on Wolf volcano. Following a focused breeding program, 158 young hybrid tortoises have now been released on their ancestral island.
