Google explores turning discarded phones into data centres

Researchers at UC San Diego, backed by Google, are developing a way to turn discarded smartphones into low-carbon data centres. The project involves extracting motherboards from retired phones, clustering them together and redeploying them as a general-purpose computing platform. Researchers initially plan to build a 2,000-phone computing cluster to support computer science courses.
