Govt approves Bill to increase number of Supreme Court judges to 37

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved a Bill to increase the number of Supreme Court judges from the present 33 to 37 (excluding the Chief Justice of India). The 'Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026' will be brought in the next session of Parliament to raise the judges' strength. The number of judges was last increased in 2019.
