Govt may charge large merchants for UPI, customers to be unaffected

The Finance Ministry has proposed removing the legal provision that bars banks and payment firms from charging Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI transactions. If approved, the move could allow MDR on payments made to large merchants, while consumers would continue to use UPI free of charge. The MDR waiver has been in place since 2020 to boost digital payments.
