GST on cigarettes may be hiked after compensation cess ends: ET

The government could hike GST on cigarettes and other tobacco products after the compensation cess on these items ends on March 31, 2026, ET reported. The products currently attract a 28% GST besides the cess and other levies, taking the total indirect tax to 53%. The government is reportedly considering a proposal to hike the GST rate to 40%.
