Hawaii declares emergency as Hurricane Lowell nears

Hawaii has declared a statewide emergency ahead of Hurricane Lowell, now a Category 4 storm with winds of ~240 km/h. Located ~985 km south of Lihue, it is expected to approach western Hawaiian Islands early next week. High surf and heavy rainfall could extend hundreds of miles from the storm's centre.
