Prominent Indian historian Bipan Chandra, who was considered to be one of foremost scholars on Indian independence movement, died Saturday aged 86. A Padma Bhushan awardee, Chandra was a life-long communist and wrote several books on Indian history and politics during his lifetime. He had also served as the member of University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1993.
