How can conjunctivitis or 'pink eye' be prevented?

As per the American CDC, to prevent the spread of conjunctivitis or 'pink eye', one must wash hands often with soap and warm water and avoid touching or rubbing eyes. Health experts have also suggested wearing protective eyewear in public and disinfecting personal items to prevent contracting the infection. Infected persons must avoid swimming pools and stop wearing contact lenses.
