When & why did India shift from ballot paper to EVMs as Opposition demands reversal?

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were first used in 1982 in Kerala's Paravur Assembly constituency before being used nationwide in the 2004 general elections. The shift happened because ballot papers had shortcomings like mass stuffing, invalid markings, and logistical burdens. VVPATs, which generate confirmation slips, debuted in Nagaland in 2013 and were used nationwide in the 2019 elections.
