UB Group, previously owned by Vijay Mallya, had proposed a ₹455-crore bid for Mumbai during 2008 IPL franchise auction, but was outbid by Reliance Group. UB Group then chose to buy Bengaluru due to Mallya's links to the city, despite having winning bid for Delhi too. Diageo later acquired RCB in 2012-2014, and sold it for ₹16,800 crore in March.
