How did the tradition of Christmas carols originate?

Edward White Benson, the first Bishop of Truro in Cornwall, first devised the Christmas carol service in 1880. He started the 'Nine Lessons and Carols service' on the Christmas eve to stop people from enjoying too much in the local pubs. The service helped bring communities together and later spread across the world.
