How did US head of state come to be called President?

In absence of any precedent, American lawmakers proposed several titles, including 'Your Highness' to address George Washington when he was elected to lead the country. The title of 'President' was chosen to refer to the head of state to chart US' independent course away from European monarchies. Washington, born on February 22, 1732, became the first US President in 1789.
