Iran has a network of seven islands along its southern coastline, with researchers calling it an "arch defence". The islands - Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, Hengam, Qeshm, Larak and Hormuz - allow Iran to monitor the Strait of Hormuz.
