How has Mount Everest's height varied over the years?

In 1954, the Survey of India had estimated Mount Everest’s height to be 8,848 metres (29,028 feet) which was widely accepted. An Italian survey in 1987 determined 8,872 metres as its height. In 1999, an American survey estimated Mount Everest’s height to be 8,850 metres. A Chinese measurement in 2005 estimated that Mount Everest’s height was 8,844.43 metres.
