How have Ukraine's borders changed over the years?
Since gaining independence from Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine has lost chunks of its territory. In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, a southern peninsular region in Black Sea. After Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, it assumed partial control of Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk, located in Ukraine's east. Ukraine also maintains control over parts of Russia's Kursk Oblast.
