How Iran chooses its Supreme Leader?

Under Iran's constitution, Assembly of Experts chooses and oversees the Supreme Leader. The Assembly of Experts has 88 clerics and is elected through a controlled system. The candidates for the Assembly are approved by the Guardian Council, whose members are directly or indirectly chosen by Supreme Leader. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei became Supreme Leader after death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989.
