According to Hindu traditions, 14 diyas are lit during the Pradosh period on Choti Diwali, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, but at least five diyas must be lit. A 'Yamadeep' (diya for God of death) facing south is either placed outside the main entrance or near the drain. People pray to Yama for protection from the dangers of premature death.
