How Trump, who wants Greenland, already has a free hand there?

US President Donald Trump said they need Greenland for national security but US already has free hand there. During World War II when Nazi Germany occupied Denmark, its ambassador in US signed defence deal with US to stop Germany. The deal allowed US to "construct, maintain, and operate" military bases, "house personnel" and "control landings, takeoffs" across Greenland.
