The country’s oldest IIT, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur was established in 1950 at the old Hijli Detention Camp in Kharagpur where several freedom fighters had sacrificed their lives during the independence struggle. "Here in the place of that Hijli Detention Camp stands the fine monument of India, representing India's urges, India's future in the making," Pandit Nehru had remarked.
