In a first, the liver and both kidneys of a genetically modified pig were transplanted into a 53-year-old brain-dead man in China. The transplanted pig organs showed no complications in the first 24 hours. But after 36 hours human cells began replacing pig cells in liver and kidneys, suggesting that the man’s immune system had detected the organs were foreign.
