Indians numbered 127,42,39,769 at 5 pm on Saturday, the World Population Day, constituting an estimated 17.25% of the global population, as per National Population Stabilisation Fund, an autonomous body under the Union Health Ministry. The body further noted that the Indian population was growing at 1.6% a year, and could make the country world's most populous by 2050.
