India's bullet train project faces ₹40,000-crore land compensation shock

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project could see its cost rise by ₹40,000 crore after higher compensation was awarded to landowners in Gujarat, the project authority has informed Gujarat High Court. In one case, Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Authority hiked compensation for land parcel fixed at ₹50/sqm in 2020 to ₹660/sqm, taking the cost from ₹85.86 lakh to ₹8.46 crore.
