India’s first woman botany PhD who transformed sugarcane

Dr Janaki Ammal became the first Indian woman to earn a PhD in Botany from the University of Michigan and later revolutionised India’s sugarcane through pioneering hybrid research. Overcoming caste and gender bias, she strengthened Indian science, returned at Jawaharlal Nehru’s request, and was honoured with the Padma Shri for her contributions.
