India to surpass Japan, Germany as 3rd largest economy by 2028

India is on track to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2028, overtaking Japan and Germany, according to the IMF. Currently ranked fifth with a GDP of $4.2 trillion in 2025, India is projected to reach $5.6 trillion by 2028. The US and China remain the top two global economies, far ahead in absolute GDP size.
