India was a member of the United Nations before independence

India was one of the founding members of the United Nations when it was established in 1945, before its independence in 1947. The intergovernmental organisation was established after the end of World War II to promote international co-operation and prevent future wars. The United Nations officially came into existence on October 24, 1945, after the ratification of its charter.
