Indian scientists reveal what caused Portugal-sized hole in Antarctica 2 yrs ago
Indian scientists have found that extreme weather conditions caused Portugal-sized hole, known as polynya, to open in Antarctica in 2024. Researchers said at least six intense atmospheric rivers brought moisture and warmth, while marine heatwaves brought warmer deep ocean water to surface, preventing sea ice from freezing. The study warned such events may become more frequent as climate warms.
