Indian scientists uncover 250-year history of Antarctica's mysterious hole

Indian scientists and international collaborators reconstructed the history of Antarctica's Maud Rise Polynya to 1774 using a 122-metre ice core. A polynya is essentially a large patch of open water that forms within an ice-covered ocean. The study identified three major events comparable to the 1974-76 opening, which exceeded 3 lakh sq km. Researchers found these events occurred in clusters.
