Iran once held US diplomats hostage for 444 days

Several Iranian students stormed the US Embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979, taking over 50 US diplomats hostage. This came as a reaction after the US granted asylum to Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran who was overthrown during the Iranian revolution. The hostages were freed 444 days after the crisis which led to US sanctions against Iran.
