Iraqi parliament elects Nizar Amidi as new President

The Iraqi parliament on Saturday elected Nizar Amidi as the President of the country, five months after a parliamentary election did not produce a majority. Amidi, a leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Party, secured a decisive victory with 227 votes. The President now has 15 days to task the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc as Prime Minister.
