Japan hit by massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake; tsunami alert issued

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck off the coast of Kumamoto on Japan's island of Kyushu on Tuesday afternoon, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami advisory. Authorities warned that tsunami waves of up to 1 metre (3 feet) could reach parts of the coast.
