Karnataka becomes 1st state to introduce alcohol content-based tax

Karnataka’s new excise policy has increased alcohol tax by up to 20% based on alcohol content, leading to a sharp rise in prices of low-cost liquor. Meanwhile, premium whisky, rum and vodka brands may become cheaper due to reduced excise duty. Local manufacturers have criticised the move, claiming it favours multinational companies while burdening middle-class.
