Kolkata's Salt Lake area sinking 19-20 mm per year: GSI
The Salt Lake area, on fringes of Kolkata, is sinking 19-20 mm per year, Dr Sandip Som of Geological Survey of India said. Salt Lake, mostly built by filling up waterbodies, is experiencing groundwater depletion which could be one of the reasons for land subsidence (sinking), he added. The data was recorded over the past two-and-a-half years, Dr Som said.
