Lancet warns liver disease may affect 1.8 billion people by 2050

Metabolic liver disease (MASLD) could affect 1.8 billion people by 2050, driven by rising obesity and high blood sugar, a Lancet study warns. Cases have surged 143% to 1.3 billion globally. In India, nearly 40% face liver issues, even without alcohol use, as modern lifestyles, poor diets, and environmental factors increasingly harm liver health across all age groups.
