Libyan dictator Gaddafi was killed on this day in 2011

The longest-serving leader in Africa and the Arab world, Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, was killed by rebel forces near his hometown of Sirte on October 20, 2011. Gaddafi led a coup in 1969 to overthrow Libyan King Idris, who was out of the country at the time. Gaddafi's government was accused of several human rights violations against its own people.
