Life ban on convicted politicians is harsh, 6 yrs is enough: Govt tells Supreme Court

A lifetime ban on politicians convicted in criminal cases is 'harsh' and the current legal provisions for a six-year disqualification are enough, Centre has told the Supreme Court. Responding to a plea for lifetime ban, Centre said the current provisions are based on principles of "proportionality and reasonability". It also said the matter falls strictly within the Parliament's domain.
