The 'light pillar' phenomenon, wherein multicoloured pillar-like patterns appear suspended in the sky, has been witnessed in numerous Russian cities. A Russian Academy of Sciences member explained the phenomenon, "The air was humid and then the water started to crystallise. Basically, pieces of ice or snowflakes started to form in the air." The phenomenon occurs when ice crystals reflect light.
