Madras HC bans cow slaughter in TN on Eid, says 'It's not essential to Islam'

Madras High Court directed Tamil Nadu government to impose an immediate ban on cow and calf slaughter on the eve of Eid and other days. The court said cow slaughter during Eid is “neither essential to nor necessarily required” in Islam. It also cited state government’s 1976 order banning cow slaughter to protect milk production and improve the rural economy.
