Male octopus' specialised arm serves as both sensory & mating organ: Study

Male octopuses use a specialised arm called the hectocotylus to place a package of sperm inside the female's reproductive system. A new study has found that the arm also acts as a sensory organ capable of detecting the female hormone progesterone. This allows it to locate and fertilise a mate, even if the male cannot see its partner, it added.
