Marathi becomes compulsory subject in all schools across Maharashtra

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a bill making Marathi a compulsory subject in all schools from standard 1st to 10th in a phased manner from academic year 2020-21. Under the Act, schools will face a penalty of ₹1 lakh for non-compliance. The development came on Marathi Language Day which marks birth anniversary of late poet V V Shirwadkar.
