Meghalaya varsity built illegally on forest land, SC panel recommends ₹150 cr fine

The University of Science and Technology in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district is built on 25 hectares of encroached forest land, according to a report by the Supreme Court's Central Empowered Committee. The committee recommended a cumulative penalty of ₹150.35 crore on the private university. It has also been suggested that the area be fully restored to normal forest within a year.
