Melbourne in Australia was previously called Batmania

The modern-day city of Melbourne in Australia was briefly named 'Batmania' after John Batman, who claimed to have found the city in 1835. Other proposed names included Bearbrass, Bareport, Bareheep, and Bareberp. The colony was eventually named 'Victoria' after the reigning English monarch Queen Victoria, and the main town was named 'Melbourne' in honour of Lord Melbourne.
