Argentina skipper Lionel Messi made his 31st FIFA World Cup appearance in the Round of 16 match against Egypt. He surpassed former American footballer Kristine Lilly's record for most World Cup appearances by any player in history. Notably, Messi holds the record for the most goals in FIFA World Cup history, having scored 21 goals.
