Meta announces major layoffs to fuel artificial intelligence push

Meta is cutting approximately 8,000 employees, roughly 10% of its workforce, starting May 20. Alongside a freeze on 6,000 open roles, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is pivoting resources toward an AI-first strategy to compete with OpenAI and Google. Affected US staff will receive at least 16 weeks of severance as the company prioritises automation and leaner, specialised teams.
